Woman killed, man and dog injured in shooting near University Medical Center

A woman was shot to death Sunday (Aug. 14) in the Tulane-Gravier neighborhood, the New Orleans Police Department reported. The shooting also left a man and a dog injured.

Police were notified of the shooting at about 4:50 p.m. First District officers came to site at Canal and South Derbigny streets, near University Medical Center, where they found a crashed vehicle with a woman’s body inside.

The woman was later identified as Derrah Nelson. Nelson was 24 and died of gunshot wounds.

The man and the dog were on the corner suffering from gunshot wounds, police said. The man was transported to the emergency room, and the dog was taken to the Louisiana SPCA for treatment.

The shooting was first reported at Iberville Street and North Claiborne Avenue.

Anyone with information is urged to call the NOPD Homicide Division at 504-658-5300 to speak to a detective, or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 to leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward.

This report was updated Aug. 16 with the name and age of the homicide victim.
