The Trombone Shorty Foundation celebrates in the holiday spirit today at Warren Easton High School. The Toys from Troy event features Santa Claus, the Trombone Shorty Academy players, a toy giveaway and more.
Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, internationally renowned trombonist and Warren Easton graduate, returns to his alma mater annually to host the event, now in its third year.
Some of the toys were collected at the Tunes for Toys concert held Thursday, Dec. 19, at Tipitina’s. For the price of one unwrapped toy, fans saw the Hot 8 Brass Band, the New Breed Brass Band and the Trombone Shorty Academy band.
The Trombone Shorty Academy, featured at today’s event, educates the next generation of New Orleans jazz musicians at the Jazz & Heritage Foundation. The curriculum, curated by Trombone Shorty and Trombone Shorty Foundation Executive Director Bill Taylor, is modeled on Danny Barker’s legendary program at the Fairview Baptist Church.
Toys from Troy will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Warren Easton, 3019 Canal St. One complimentary gift will be provided for each child to their parent or guardian on a first-come, first-served basis while the supply of toys lasts. And, of course, all guests will receive holiday treats and entertainment. For more information, see the event Facebook page.
