A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, we wanted to show you Star Wars. And this week at The Broad, we open ROGUE ONE. The Star Wars universe has seen many side entries over the last 39 years. We’ve had Ewok adventures and Holiday Specials and animated TV shows galore. But ROGUE ONE is the first side story to have wide critical acclaim.

This week at The Broad, we give thanks for a fantastic opening year. FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEMMOONLIGHT, and ARRIVAL all keep going this week. MOANA is now playing, and Thanksgiving weekend tickets are already available.

2016 has been the best year in the history of The Broad Theater. Now of course we can say that because it is the only year in our history. But we thought we’d take a moment in this week to give thanks to the special people who made this possible.

We understand. You’re nursing the wearing off of either a sugar high or a possible hangover. But we are all well rested over on North Broad and we’re ready to go. This week, we begin the holiday movie season by putting our programming foot firmly on the gas pedal with four new films to share with you and they are about as different as four films can be.

This week, we welcome back Kelly Reichardt for CERTAIN WOMEN, we welcome Christian Slater and James Franco for the first time for KING COBRA, and we all bow down to the glory of Iggy Pop for GIMME DANGER. Oh, and DOCTOR STRANGE drops in as well.

Trick or treat? The question that drives our love affair with Halloween season. We love watching scary movies while suffering from a self-induced sugar high brought on by smuggling candy from your younger brother’s haul. This weekend, The Broad Theater has an answer. We intend to treat you. We plan to treat you with a film by a master of the arts as well as some special screenings that you won’t see anywhere else in the city.

Got plans for this Halloween weekend? Change them! We’ve got two horror films playing late night from October 28th-30th. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS is without a doubt the finest film in the franchise (Don’t believe us? Stop on by and ask for Michael) and has early acting roles for Patricia Arquette and Laurence Fishburne. We also are doing a sneak preview of THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, a horror film actually set to release in December but already gaining great press. Continue reading »

There’s no doubt about it: this week’s lineup is very eclectic. We’ve got BOO! A MADEA HALLOWEEN, GIRL ASLEEP, and DENIAL opening this week, while QUEEN OF KATWEAMERICAN HONEY, and BIRTH OF A NATION all return this week for those who missed out the first time around.

GIRL ASLEEP has been talked about in our office since the very first moment we saw the trailer. It might be unfair to label it as Australia’s answer to Napoleon Dynamite, but if you’re looking to explain to your friends what it’s like it is a good shorthand answer. Filled with amazing characters and moments of pure delight, we assure you that you will not spend one sleepy moment watching it.

This week at The Broad, we’ve decided to bring something small from a major studio, and something major from a small studio. Disney’s QUEEN OF KATWE is one of those truly great inspirational sports movies, but instead of soccer or hockey, you have the universal sport of chess. Starring David Oyelowo (SELMA) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 YEARS A SLAVE) we can not recommend this movie highly enough. That being said, it will be playing a limited schedule, so we encourage you to check our showtimes and make some time out of your schedule this next week.

A24 has been a valuable partner with us, helping us screen such titles as THE WITCH, SWISS ARMY MAN, and the current box office record holder here THE LOBSTER. Their newest film is AMERICAN HONEY and the reviews have just come in and they are phenomenal. The Atlantic calls it a “singularly magical experience that’ll echo in the brains of its viewers for months”. A24 is also the studio behind MOONLIGHT, which will be joining us next month. We’ve got FIVE new films debuting this week, featuring zombies, stranglers, giant lizards, impostors and a sure-fire Oscar contender.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN has lived up to its star power while DEMON and IXCANUL have proven to be powerful films from corners of the globe that are less traveled. This week, we’ve managed to tip the scales in terms of quantity and quality with eight movies playing in our four humble screens.

This week at The Broad, we’ve got not one, not two, not three, but four films coming to you! DANNY SAYS, IXCANUL, and DEMON all open along with a special screening of IDIOCRACY in honor of election season.

The 1st Annual Broad Theater Latin American Cinema Series is coming this weekend. We will be showcasing a wide variety of shorts and features from Haiti, Cuba, Argentina, Guatemala, Peru, Mexico and Colombia. Titles include such film festival standouts such as THE APOSTATE, and Martin Sheen’s latest film THE VESSEL. We will also be screening IXCANUL, the first Guatemalan film shot in the Mayan language.

This Week at The Broad, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN rides into town while TIME BANDITS joins us in honor of the 1st Annual Art House Theater Day! Plus Sully, Snowden, and The Beatles continue their runs.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN is a remake that manages to more than justify its existence by way of its phenomenal cast. It’s a rare treat to see so many of today’s Hollywood stars work together with such gusto. Catch it in our biggest house this weekend with the volume cranked up and the lights down low. If you are really feeling the western spirit, don’t forget to mozy up to the bar for a drink or two in a clean glass before or after the show. Continue reading »

SULLY topped our box office this week so we’re pysched to keep it for another as we introduce three new titles to our lineup. SNOWDEN is the latest film from legendary director Oliver Stone. It covers the entire journey of Edward Snowden from his life in the armed services to ending up back in the USSR.
