This Week at The Broad brings two new films for your post-carnival enjoyment, and they are rather different from each other to say the least. LOGAN is being described as the last Wolverine film to star Hugh Jackman. But even more than a swan song for a superhero, this is a drama that deserves respect even for those who aren’t into tights and spandex.
We understand that there are a few more entertainment options available for you than normal this weekend. With a little thing called Mardi Gras taking up most of the week, we are offering three news films (GET OUT, ELLE, and THE RED TURTLE) so that you have options that don’t involve the procurement of beads.
GET OUT might just be the most talked about film of the spring. Directed by Jordan Peele it is the tale of a boyfriend doing the most horrible thing he can imagine, meeting the girlfriend’s parents. Only thing is, it gets worse. We will be hosting a few sneak preview screenings on Thursday in case you just can’t wait to see what happens next. Continue reading »
We can’t believe that this year has gone so quickly. Twelve months ago, we didn’t even have screens in place, let alone movies to show. Now we’ve shown dozens of films to thousands of people and had a blast in the process. It has been a roller coaster ride and we don’t plan on getting off any time soon.
SING, FENCES, ROGUE ONE, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA will be here for your New Years festivities. We had quite a busy weekend and look forward to having you visit us one last time in 2016. With all these amazing films playing, we are holding off on any new films until next year, but we do have one last present to share with you.Continue reading »
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, we wanted to show you Star Wars. And this week at The Broad, we open ROGUE ONE. The Star Wars universe has seen many side entries over the last 39 years. We’ve had Ewok adventures and Holiday Specials and animated TV shows galore. But ROGUE ONE is the first side story to have wide critical acclaim.
2016 has been the best year in the history of The Broad Theater. Now of course we can say that because it is the only year in our history. But we thought we’d take a moment in this week to give thanks to the special people who made this possible. Continue reading »
We understand. You’re nursing the wearing off of either a sugar high or a possible hangover. But we are all well rested over on North Broad and we’re ready to go. This week, we begin the holiday movie season by putting our programming foot firmly on the gas pedal with four new films to share with you and they are about as different as four films can be.
This week, we welcome back Kelly Reichardt for CERTAIN WOMEN, we welcome Christian Slater and James Franco for the first time for KING COBRA, and we all bow down to the glory of Iggy Pop for GIMME DANGER. Oh, and DOCTOR STRANGE drops in as well.
Trick or treat? The question that drives our love affair with Halloween season. We love watching scary movies while suffering from a self-induced sugar high brought on by smuggling candy from your younger brother’s haul. This weekend, The Broad Theater has an answer. We intend to treat you. We plan to treat you with a film by a master of the arts as well as some special screenings that you won’t see anywhere else in the city.
Got plans for this Halloween weekend? Change them! We’ve got two horror films playing late night from October 28th-30th. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS is without a doubt the finest film in the franchise (Don’t believe us? Stop on by and ask for Michael) and has early acting roles for Patricia Arquette and Laurence Fishburne. We also are doing a sneak preview of THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, a horror film actually set to release in December but already gaining great press.Continue reading »
GIRL ASLEEP has been talked about in our office since the very first moment we saw the trailer. It might be unfair to label it as Australia’s answer to Napoleon Dynamite, but if you’re looking to explain to your friends what it’s like it is a good shorthand answer. Filled with amazing characters and moments of pure delight, we assure you that you will not spend one sleepy moment watching it. Continue reading »
This week at The Broad, we’ve decided to bring something small from a major studio, and something major from a small studio. Disney’s QUEEN OF KATWE is one of those truly great inspirational sports movies, but instead of soccer or hockey, you have the universal sport of chess. Starring David Oyelowo (SELMA) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 YEARS A SLAVE) we can not recommend this movie highly enough. That being said, it will be playing a limited schedule, so we encourage you to check our showtimes and make some time out of your schedule this next week.
A24 has been a valuable partner with us, helping us screen such titles as THE WITCH, SWISS ARMY MAN, and the current box office record holder here THE LOBSTER. Their newest film is AMERICAN HONEY and the reviews have just come in and they are phenomenal. The Atlantic calls it a “singularly magical experience that’ll echo in the brains of its viewers for months”. A24 is also the studio behind MOONLIGHT, which will be joining us next month.Continue reading »
