Dixie Brewery owners Kendra and Joseph Bruno are fighting to save their 1907 landmark building from demolition by challenging the constitutional grounds of Louisiana taking their property in order to make way for a new VA Hospital, according to an article written by Roberta Brandes Gratz in Huffington Post.

According to the article, the state expropriated properties in a 30-acre site slated for VA and LSU hospitals under a “quick-take proceeding” and turned them over to the city, who then handed them to the hospitals — a move that the Brunos are fighting in Civil District Court Jan. 7.

Dixie, located on Tulane Avenue adjacent to where both VA and LSU hospitals are now under construction, is the last privately owned regional brewery in the South, the article reads.

Tabari Butler was found guilty on two counts of second-degree murder Thursday evening for the January 2012 deaths of Joseph “Big Joe” Evans, 41, and his 17-year-old son, Joseph “Little Joe” Elliott.

Ten witnesses, all called by prosecutors, painted the details from a night that a left father and son laying dead side-by-side at a St. Louis Street home.
