A Mid-City restaurant specializing in gourmet grilled cheese sandwich is hoping to expand upwards – or at least to the roof.

Melt, located at 2549 Banks St., is lobbying the City Planning Commission for an upstairs outdoor patio. In order to build upstairs, the lot must be rezoned to HU-B1 Neighborhood Business District.

The new rooftop would hold about 35 people and patrons will be able to consume alcohol on the patio.

Melt held an NPP Community meeting earlier this month to answer any questions or concerns about the rooftop patio. Roux Merlo, representing the Greater Mid-City Business Association, was the only attendee. Merlo “repeatedly expressed support for the project” throughout the meeting and welcomed the addition, according to documents submitted to the city.

The Tulane Canal Neighborhood Association has also shown support for the expansion, developers said. Developers had not received any negative comments or opposition – from emails or letters – to the expansion as of early May.

The new rooftop would hold about 35 people and patrons will be able to consume alcohol on the patio. There are no plans for an outdoor bar – at least for now.

Melt opened in November after a few delays and offers a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches along with a full bar. The eatery is the brainchild of Barcadia partner Miles Tully Jr.

The CPC should hear the restaurant’s request at their July 25 meeting.
