The end of the school year is rapidly approaching, and with it comes a desire to get outdoors and be one with nature. But nature is hot and movie theaters are cold, so let’s dial back the urge to get sunburn and see some exciting new independent films that we’re showcasing this weekend.

FRANTZ was one of the standout films of the recent French Film Festival here in town and is a truly mesmerizing film taking place in France and Germany in the years between the two World Wars. This is a film that asks questions about the healing power of lies in a world that is spinning completely tilted.

THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MAKI on the other hand is part boxing movie, part romance, and all Finnish. Based on the true story about a featherweight boxer with dreams of the title in 1962, this film by first-time director Juho Kuosmanen got some great notices at Cannes included the prestigious Un Certain Regard Prize. For those of us who loved Rocky because he loved Adrienne, this is the movie for you.

MY ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL SINKING INTO THE SEA is another clear reminder that high school is hell. But while your school might have been awful, this school is literally on the verge of collapse. Dash Shaw makes the transition from graphic novels to film with an inspired work featuring the voice talents of Reggie Watts, Lena Dunham, Maya Rudolph, and Jason Schwartzman. You will not see a movie like this anywhere else in the state, so we hope you bring your hall pass and join us.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2.SLEIGHT, and THE LOST CITY OF Z stick around for another week in our rotation. Without spoiling any of the film we can state that Cat Stevens has found plenty of new fans after this most recent Marvel film release.

Next Thursday, everyone can hear you scream. ALIEN: COVENANT will be opening early on 5/18 with a preview screening at 9:15. Reviews are strong for Ridley Scott’s official return to the franchise he gave life to, and our staff will be available in the lobby to remind you that it’s only a movie.

Thanks again for reading, and we’ll see you at the movies!
