Several Mid-City artists and ensembles are hitting the stage for the 2017 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Xanier University’s Jazz Ensemble will hit the stage Saturday, April 29 at 11:30 a.m. The ensemble, which will play on the Lagniappe Stage, has toured the United States and South American countries while being recognized annually for its work toward preserving jazz.

Keeping with the educational performances, the McDonogh #35 High School gospel choir is slated to perform Thursday, May 4. The group’s innovation year after year make it a crowd favorite among Gospel lovers and those who appreciate fine choreography, and the ensemble’s biography on the Jazz Fest’s website touts the group’s charm.

“Through the years, the students change, but this popular choir remains strong and spirited,” the bio said. “It starts with an energetic leader and continues with powerful soloists who step out from the ensemble.”

The group is scheduled at sing from 2:45 to 3:25 p.m. in the Gospel Tent.

The International School of Louisiana, which is opening a Mid-City campus later this year, is also slated to perform Thursday. The school’s Circus Arts Kids will go on stage at 5:15 in the Kid’s Tent.

Those planning to attend the ReNEW Schools Turnaround Arts Choir performance will get a special treat Friday, May 5. David Baptiste, Sr. – Louisiana Hall of Fame musician – will play with the school choir at 5:15 p.m. in the Kid’s Tent.

Baptists and his family “have been working in ReNEW schools since their inception, bringing groups of students to perform for Michelle Obama two times during the Obama administration,” according to his biography. “They have performed together in numerous locations across the city including the House of Blues, Generations Hall, the Trinity Concert Series and City Council.”

The Archdiocese of New Orleans Gospel Choir will also make an appearance Saturday, May 6, in the Gospel Tent. The choir consists of members from more than 25 Catholic and non-Catholic churches. They’re slated to perform at 1:55 p.m.
