New Orleans City Councilmember Susan Guidry, who represents most of Mid-City, will not run for a contested at-large council seat next year.
Guidry, who has served two consecutive terms as District A representative, announced Thursday she plans to return to retirement. She was first elected after Katrina and chairs the Criminal Justice Committee while also serving on the Utility Committee.
“I am very proud of the work I have done toward recovery and beyond,” Guidry said in a release. “I wish to continue these efforts without the distraction of a campaign.”
Outside of politics, Guidry plans to continue to support criminal justice reform efforts, the release said. She is also looking forward to a second retirement, spending more time with her family and traveling.
Guidry’s seat expires May 2018, and municipal elections for those seats will be held later this year.
